Celebrating How We Teach: Spring Teaching Programs, Events, Grants, and Resources

by Tarun Charaipotra

Dear NYU Colleagues,

As we begin a new term, we want to extend our warmest wishes for a semester filled with curiosity, connection, and meaningful learning. We are deeply grateful for all that you do to support our students and one another, and we look ahead with optimism to the opportunities this semester brings.

This past fall was a productive one at the NYU Center for Teaching and Learning. Programs such as TeachTalks, the Reaching All Learners Institute, and the CTL Reads book club fostered rich dialogue and reflection on teaching practice. The launch of 20 Faculty Learning Communities created new spaces for peer learning and community, and the Student Activities Grants provided experiential learning opportunities for students in New York City.

This spring, we are pleased to introduce new offerings — such as the Writing and Reading Institute for Teaching Excellence and Faculty Learning Exchange Week — along with a full slate of workshops and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Symposium (April 17). The term will culminate in a celebration of you, the faculty, during Teacher Appreciation Week (April 27- May 1).

We warmly invite you to connect with us in person at the CTL Open Houses (Feb 3, 12 and 18), where you can engage with the CTL team and your colleagues, exchange ideas, and explore ways to enrich your teaching and learning.

To stay updated on all CTL programs, events, and other offerings:

As the semester begins, the CTL also encourages you to review the University’s Faculty Guidance for Student Support, which provides information and suggested action steps to connect your students to support resources when they need them most.

As always, please share your questions and suggestions with teaching@nyu.edu

Wishing you a fulfilling and successful spring semester. We look forward to working with you.

At TeachTalks, participants discuss pressing issues in student learning and share pedagogical innovations across disciplines. Topics include teaching with generative AI, cultivating respectful disagreement, student engagement, and more.

WRITE is a three-part workshop series built around a simple premise: if students are turning to AI for reading, writing, and feedback, it’s often because we haven’t taught them how to do those things well, or given them feedback that they can implement. This series will help faculty redesign courses, assignments, and classroom activities in order to promote student learning.

RALI is a three-part workshop series that explores principles for engaging all learners. Participants will have an opportunity to develop inclusive classroom policies, structured activities for teaching difficult texts or topics, and strategies for responding to conflict in the classroom.

During Faculty Learning EXchange (FLEX) Week, faculty members at the New York campus of NYU are invited to attend classes taught by their peers or to host faculty guests in their classrooms. FLEX week offers faculty the opportunity to reflect on teaching practices, explore subject matter outside their expertise, and foster connection and dialogue among NYU colleagues.
