Celebrating How We Teach: Fall Teaching Events, Grants, and Resources

by Tarun Charaipotra

Dear NYU colleagues,

Welcome to the fall semester! Teaching is central to NYU’s academic mission and our faculty have made NYU a global leader in the quality of learning experiences that we offer. The NYU Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) supports this mission by championing inclusive, student-centered, and evidence-based practices across the NYU community—and by working closely with many university partners.

This fall, now settled into a freshly renovated space at 18 Washington Place, the CTL is launching the How We Teach Initiative, a university-wide effort to reflect on, share, and strengthen teaching practices. At the heart of this initiative is the How We Teach Toolkit, a set of self-paced Brightspace modules that highlight NYU’s core teaching values and feature insights and reflections from our faculty.

Now more than ever, faculty naturally have questions about how we can create classrooms where all students feel comfortable participating and sharing their views—a commitment we all undertake in creating an environment that fosters robust dialogue and debate. We therefore draw your attention particularly to the toolkit modules on Building Classroom Community, Reaching All Learners, and Fostering Constructive Dialogue.

As part of How We Teach, we are offering a range of new and continuing programs this semester. These include two grant programs with upcoming deadlines: the Faculty Learning Community Grant and the Student Activities Grant.

To stay updated on all CTL programs, events, and other offerings:

As the semester begins, the CTL also encourages you to review the university’s Faculty Guidance for Student Support, which provides information and suggested action steps to connect your students to support resources when they need them most.

As always, please share your questions and suggestions with teaching@nyu.edu.

We look forward to working with you this year.

Faculty Guidance for Student Support

Coordinating support can be crucial for students’ academic progress. The Faculty Guidance for Student Support resource provides information and suggested action steps for when a student in your class is absent due to illness, requests academic accommodations for religious observance, exhibits concerning behavior, or falls behind in their work.

Midterm Progress Reports

Frequent, actionable feedback to all your students is also a form of support. We encourage you to complete Midterm Progress Reports and provide other formative feedback to students throughout the semester.
